Hello again! We hope all is great with you and you are having a good winter so far…. We are continuing our shortened trip this year.. Looks like we will be heading back home in March to take care of a few things, but plan to be back on the boat this summer with a exciting trip on the boat from Florida to Maine. We have done it before, but it’s been a while. Will keep you posted.

Green Turtle Cay.

The Elbow Reef Lighthouse was built to mark the Elbow Reef during the 1860’s. The lighthouse went into operation in 1863. It stands 89 feet tall, with 101 steps, and is one of only two remaining beacons saved from automation. The locals undertake extraordinary efforts to secure the parts for the kerosene-burning apparatus of the light, most of which are no longer manufactured.

We had planned to stay in Hopetown for a bit longer, but as usual, the weather dictated our time and we had a great weather window to move down to our next stop, Spanish Wells, a small Island off of Eleuthera, Bahamas. We left Hopetown, and made it down to the southern part of Great Abaco, and anchored for the night. Nice evening, pretty calm, and then left early the next morning for Spanish Wells.

Spanish Wells is a small island just off Eleuthera’s northern tip. a group of Eleutheran Adventureres first settled it in the late 1600s. There were a group of English Puritans who were seeking religious freedom and a new life in the New World. They named the island “Russell Island” after one of their leaders, William Russell. Over the years, the island’s name has changed to Spanish Wells, and it has become a hub for the Bahamas fishing industry. The island’s location made it an ideal spot for fishing and many of the island’s residents make their living from fishing and lobstering.

We were here in 2008 on our first year cruising. We love the quiet laid-back atmosphere and of course, the beautiful white sand beaches. It is changing as people discover it, but for now, it’s an awesome spot to spend some time.

And one of the best things about this island is that when the wind blows, we have a fantastic spot to go kitesurfing, and wing foiling. Wayne has the winging down, but I’m going to give it a try this year.

We will be here in Spanish Wells for another week or two when we will start looking for a weather window to move back north and then west to Florida. In the meanwhile… wishing you all well.
