Continuing on….

We left Prime Cay anchorage and headed south to Georgetown. This is one of the areas that we have to go out into the Atlantic Ocean to get around shallow water. After a lumpy start, it turned out to be a great day. Fast Betty was with us and they fished and caught another large Wahoo and a Tuna.

We had planned on staying in Georgetown for more than a week, but once we got there, saw our buddies, and checked the weather…there were a couple of big storms coming our way, one after the other, so we decided we should head back north so we can make sure we can get back to Spanish Wells by our departure date. ( We are planning on leaving the boat in Spanish Wells while we head home for a couple months. Will return to bring the boat to Florida in May )

We had a nice run back up to Staniel Cay. I just have to explain about the weather we were having this year. VERY strange. Normally this time of year, the fronts come through and most of the wind is out of the North or East. The way the islands are facing, most of our regular anchorages are protected. The fronts come in and the wind usually clocks around quickly to South, Southwest, West, and then back to the normal flow of North and East. If the winds stay to the South and West too much, the anchorages get very choppy and uncomfortable. There are places to move around to, but most of the other boats go there too, making it a bit crowded. This year, we have been having very unusual storms with strong west components .

So this next storm was predicted to be staying West for a few days, so we decided to head further north to Bell Island and Caimbridge Cay to be better protected.

Reading our blog, you are probably wondering why in the heck we do this… Yes, it can get frustrating, but that only makes the good days better!! Just today I was looking through my blog from 2013, and I’m whining about the weather there too. haha. Guess it’s all part of the journey.

Since the word was out about the upcoming west wind, there were a lot of boats already in Caimbridge Cay . The problem with these fronts, is when the wind changes, your anchorage might not be the best place to be. After switching to Southeast, our calm anchorage turned into a rock and roll fest! Especially when the tide is turning, and the boat is sitting sideways to the wind. So then we have to decide to move or sit there and rock because the wind was forecasted to come back to West again… It’s hard to explain, but I hope you get why we are always at the mercy of the weather gods.

We decided to move across the bay and take a mooring in Caimbridge which is a little better in stronger winds to keep us facing into the wind and steady.

We had a few nice days ahead, so we were able to snorkel one of our secret spots near our anchorage.

Playing around with my 360 camera. . Watch closely at the end of this video… you can see Larry the Lobster hanging out. Check out other videos at the end of this post.

With another big front forecasted, we decided to give up our small stops northward, and made the decision to just go on up to Spanish Wells, where we can be safe on a dock. This storm looked very interesting… a big low pressure system

Yikes… this doesn’t look like something to fool around with. (we are in the red square) So onward to Spanish Wells . A long day of travel.. stopped to anchor near Current Cut. Calm before the storm I guess..

What a difference being on a dock makes during rough weather.. haha. Nasty 35knts for a full day from the west… even the channel off our dock had waves and white caps. Then wind moved around about 3 times during a 3 day period with lots of rain and thankfully not much lightning. Good thing was, we got a free fresh water wash job.

First beach walk after the storm passed.. All is well.

Back at the boat we were happy to see a couple of Manatee’s stopped by the dock to grab a quick sip of fresh water.. Such fun animals..

Now we have about two weeks to enjoy this island and hopefully the weather will stay nice so we can explore… I’ll try to get one more blog post in before we head home for a couple of months. Take care and be well.

Here are a few video clips..
